Ethiopia is the home of Arabica coffee and remains one of the absolute highest quality origins for specialty coffee. This washed lot from the Chire washing station in the Sidamo region is a great way to kick off our Ethiopia arrivals for this year.

Most coffee from Ethiopia is bought and sold through the Ethiopian Coffee Exchange (ECX) and is sold only by grade and region. Thankfully this is starting to change as the ECX responds to specialty coffee roasters desire for more traceability in the coffees they buy.

Because of this we now know that this coffee comes from the Chire private washing station in the village of Ameli and represents the coffee of around 800 smallholder farmers. Later this year we are expecting the arrival of some single farmer lots which means we can trace the coffee back to the individual grower and not just the washing station.

While this is typical in most other coffee producing countries, this level of traceability is very new in Ethiopia and is really exciting. This is the start of us hopefully being able to build closer and more sustainable relationships with both washing stations and individual producers as we like to do in other countries.

Sidamo itself is one of the best know coffee regions in the world, famed for its light and floral washed coffees. Sidamo covers a large area containing several sub areas including the famous coffee town of Yirgacheffe and the Guji zone where this coffee comes from.
